Wildfire sparks west of Palm Springs

Firefighters are battling a wildfire that sparked Friday afternoon in the Snow Creek area, west of Palm Springs.

CalFire says the fire has grew to 25 acres and crews had it 100% contained in a few hours. It was first reported around 1:30 p.m. The wildfire’s located south of Highway 111 at Snow Creek Road.

There are 100 firefighters assigned to the blaze and air tankers and helicopters are also helping attack the flames.

The fire was started by a transmission line.

“We found out with our investigators that the 500 kv transmission has a thing called a skyway at the top. it doesn’t transmit electricity but as it broke it fell along the lines and actually charged and actually started this fire,” said Lucas Spelman, Battalion Chief with the Riverside County Fire Department.

No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.
