Yucca Valley opens Cooling Center for weekend

The Yucca Valley Community Center will act as a Cooling Center on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. for folks wanting to escape the heat and smoke-filled air.

The public facility is already open during the weekdays for anyone needing to cool off.

The decision comes after the National Weather Service issued an excessive heat watch for Yucca Valley and the surrounding areas. Temperatures are expected to reach triple digits through the weekend.

Officials said another reason they decided to open the facility over the weekend is because of the poor air quality in Yucca Valley due to the nearby Lake Fire burning in the San Bernardino mountains.

Residents are encouraged to stay indoors as much as possible and use air conditioners instead of swamp coolers to reduce the amount of smoke being drawn into the home.
