President Barack Obama spends his second Father’s Day weekend in the desert
President Barack Obama is back in the valley for his fifth time in just over two years.
The visit is capping off a weeklong tour in California, with stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
But the quick stop here, is just for some rest and relaxation.
After landing at Palm Springs International Airport just after 11 a.m. Saturday, the president’s motorcade headed to Sunnylands for some time on the links.
This will be his second Father’s Day braving the triple-digit heat in our desert.
Just like many dads like to do on their big day, he’s here to play some golf.
After jogging down the stairs, the president greeted local leaders in the Coachella Valley. One member of the welcome party was Congressman Rep. Raul Ruiz, who will be celebrating his first Father’s Day Sunday. Ruiz had the chance to introduce his 3-month-old twin daughters Sky and Sage to the leader of the free world.
I mean, it was just incredible. I mean, can you imagine the stories we’re going to be able to tell when they become teenagers? It’s a wonderful first Father’s Day gift for me,” Ruiz said.
Some people wondered why the president didn’t cancel this leg of the trip after the shootings in South Carolina and a raging wildfire in our backyard.
However, Agua Caliente Chairman Jeff Grubbe said the president deserves a vacation.
“When is a good time for the president, he has to have his own time to take a little break,” Grubbe said.
In the past Air Force One drew large crowds.
But this visit less than a handful of people showed up to get their picture with the famous jet.
Nicole Williams was on a business trip and had never seen Air Force One before.
“It means everything. My father was born in Mississippi and he was in the era where there’s no African-American president. So had he lived to see this, he would be so proud. And so I feel it for him,” Williams said.
For others who’ve seen it every time it’s here, it doesn’t get old.
“I’m gonna post this picture on Facebook saying the president’s Air Force One is parked five blocks from my house. How cool is that?” Arla Provo, who lives in Palm Springs said.
Proving once again, our desert is the playground of the presidents.
“Our community appreciates that our president decides to come here and spend his weekends with us. And it’s good for our economy, it’s good for our community and I hope the world notices the Coachella Valley once again,” Ruiz said.
The president is scheduled to leave Sunday at 1 p.m.
