Firefighters stop blaze in Indio burning near homes
Firefighters were able to contain a 3 acre blaze that ignited near Avenue 38 and Madison Street just before 4:00 Monday.
According to the Indio Police Department, officers were advising at least one family to evacuate their home on Medway Street as a precaution. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 were at the scene and the elderly couple who lived in the home was refusing to leave. Firefighters were assigned to stay with the couple until the blaze was controlled.
The Imperial Irrigation District cut off energy in the area due to power poles catching fire. Cal Fire says power will probably be out in the area for several hours, crews are also expected to be on scene until about 9:00 p.m. mopping up hot spots.
Avenue 38 between Burr Street and Madison will also be closed while crews remain on scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
