Nine workers hurt in Riverside bridge collapse

Nine workers were hospitalized with unknown injuries when a freeway underpass under construction in Corona partially collapsed, authorities said Saturday.

The collapse occurred at the East Grand Avenue underpass of the Riverside (91) Freeway around 11:10 p.m. Friday, Cheryl Donohue, a spokesperson for the Riverside County Transportation Commission said.

The cause of the collapse and the extent of the workers’ injuries were not known, Donohue said.

The underpass construction was part of the State Route 91 Corridor Improvement project, which involves the widening of the freeway through Corona, Donohue said.
