Charities help the less fortunate put a Thanksgiving meal on the table

The holidays can be difficult for families in need here in the valley.

A number of charities are working to make sure everyone can put a festive meal on the table.

“I just lost my job recently and with Thanksgiving being tomorrow I’m going to be able to cook food for my family together,” said Claudia Reynoso from Indio.

“I’m happy for this cause I can’t have a Thanksgiving and give my kids everything they need,” said Sabrna Taylor from Coachella.

No matter your situation, not being able to provide for your family during the holidays is something no one wants to experience.

Which is why many charities make it their mission to ensure that doesn’t happen.

Joe Jordan grew up helping those less fortunate.

“There’s nothing better than helping those less fortunate. Those kids and families don’t have much. So when we can rally up the community and all the volunteers and supporters to serve those in need there’s nothing better in the whole world,” Jordan said.

This is the 12th year the Jordan Outreach Mission is helping families put a meal on the table Thursday.

Families are going home with turkeys, chickens, cranberry sauce, stuffing and a bag full of fruits and vegetables.

Just down the street the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission is doing the same.

“We have a market run that goes throughout the valley and the local stores donate to our organization. And when it gets to the mission we pick through the items and we use what we can for our meals and what we can’t use we share with the community,” said Matthew Gawn CVRM food services manager.

Families leaving with full hands and full hearts, knowing the holiday means nothing without family.

“With Thanksgiving is when you’re able to stay grateful for your health, for your family and everybody being able to be together and eat together at the same table,” Reynoso said.

CVRM is serving a full breakfast Thursday morning starting at 6 a.m. and another turkey dinner starting at 4 p.m.
