2 Cathedral City HS students arrested for allegedly plotting serious crime

Two Cathedral City High School students were arrested Thursday night for allegedly plotting to commit a serious crime at the school, which investigators said could have proven to be deadly.

Authorities haven’t elaborated on the specific threat, but the two 16-year-old students are facing charges of threatening to commit a crime resulting in death or great bodily injury, and conspiring to commit such a crime, according to the release.

School officials said the students were taken into custody after school administration shared the information Thursday afternoon. A student apparently overheard the suspects talking about the alleged plot. Both suspects are now in Juvenile Hall in Indio.

“We are extremely grateful to the student who reported the conversation, our administrative and security team, and our law enforcement partners for their thorough and expedient response to this situation,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Christine Anderson. “Our students are safe, the campus is secure, and everyone responded very quickly and appropriately.”

“All threats of violence are taken seriously and investigated to determine the appropriateness of filing criminal charges,” said Lt. Glen Haas. “In this case charges were appropriate. Students, school staff and the police department responded in the manner I believe the community expects, and the result speaks for itself.”

KESQ and CBS Local 2 is working to get more information about the alleged threat.
