Apologies made for a joke that fell flat at the Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued an apology for jokes Chris Rock made about asians while hosting the 20-16 Oscars.

The comedian was recognizing the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse Coopers as the official ballot counter for the award show when he brought three asian kids on stage.

Rock hailed the trio as the firm’s “Most dedicated, accurate and hard-working representatives.”

The Academy issued the apology in response to an open letter sent to its members by several prominent asian figures in Hollywood.

The group expressed disappointment over Rock’s jokes that they say perpetuated an offensive, racist and over-used stereotype.
