Local polls prep ahead of election day

More than 700 polling locations will service Riverside County, which hit a record 1-million registered voters for the 2016 elections. California voting polls open at 7 a.m., Tuesday.

A steady stream of voters stopped by the Palm Springs City Hall on Monday, dropping off their mail-in ballots by hand.

“Make sure our votes are in there early so they count,” explained M ark E dwards and M ichael Skinner after casting their ballots.

People who have not mailed their ballot in, can walk it into their respective city clerk’s office until mid-day on election day .

Palm Springs City Clerk, Jason Thompson, told KESQ News Channel 3’s and CBS Local 2’s Katie Widner that there are three main things voters should do on election day.

Number one, be prepared.

“We recommend first and foremost, that you do review your sample ballot before you go to the polling place,” he said.

Secondly, no voter-booth selfies are allowed.

“You do need to be careful about electioneering and photographs inside the polls to protect the privacy of others voting,” he added.

Thirdly, Thompson said voters should arrive early.

“We do expect a large crowd tomorrow,” he said. “You do need to be at the polls by 8 p.m.”

Thompson said voters who are already registered have their signatures on file, therefore photo identification is not necessary.

The U.S. Department of Justice says there will be federal, election monitors in 28 states to help enforce voting laws. Something that has not been seen for more than 5 decades.
