Cathedral City Mayor talks about big changes to future infrastructure

UPDATE: 6:36 p.m.

Moving forward is the message from Cathedral City’s leaders, including Mayor Stan Henry.

City officials said they’re looking to build upon a goal that’s been in the works for a few years including updated infrastructure, new homes and a project near Bob Hope Drive and Varner Road, just north of Interstate 10.

“We wanted to celebrate our diversity, celebrate Cathedral City and bring our people together and provide them opportunities to where they would have places and spaces to go, and to enjoy their own city,” Henry said.

The southeast corner of Bob Hope Drive and Varner Road is where city leaders said they plan to build the first phase of the project, which is expected to include a new hotel, numerous restaurants and a convenience store. Moving forward, Henry said the city will look to expand the project by building hundreds of homes in between Varner Road and I-10, stretching West towards Date Palm Drive.

It’s a way, he said, the city hopes to expand its footprint.

“Most people don’t know that Cathedral City starts at Palm Drive, and currently it goes to Bob Hope Drive, with a sphere of influence that will almost go as far as Washington Street on the north side of the freeway,” Henry said. “That’s huge for Cathedral City because of the growth that can happen along the freeway frontage.”

Overall, a vision he said they hope will expand and attract more people to their city in the years ahead.

“Cathedral City is on the move,” Henry said. “We’re here to make sure that we provide a quality environment for our residents, and our tourists and our visitors.”

City officials said developers are working on getting the project approved from different agencies.

Once that’s taken place, they said that’s when they’ll start breaking ground.
