Family hosts fundraiser for local ice cream man’s funeral expenses
Neighbor’s living near Vista Corto in the unincorporated area of Desert Hot Springs heard their local ice cream man’s jingle play Saturday. Unfortunately, the call for the community was under different circumstances.
Nearly two weeks ago, a local ice cream man, Jose Luis Velasco was found beaten to death in his home. The suspect being charged with his murder is Velasco’s son, 36-year-old Jose Angel Velasco.
Velasco’s niece, Teresa Ortega, along with family and friends held a fundraiser Saturday. They sold food, drinks and of course ice cream to help cover unexpected funeral expenses.
“He was always very happy. (He was) very polite with all the neighbors, with anybody who met him, he was always polite, always serving his community. He was a very very humble man,” Ortega said.
One of his regular customers says he grew up getting ice cream from Velasco.
“He always used to give us free ice cream and stuff. He was a good man, so I heard and I thought let me find some money so I can come and help with anything,” Jose Sanchez said.
Velasco’s wife says she wanted him to retire but he loved serving the community.
“We are totally grateful that we see the community showing so much support especially in this situation. We are so thankful,” Ortega said.
