Thousands of valley children get backpacks from Coachella Valley Rescue Mission

The Coachella Valley Rescue Mission gave nearly 2,000 children school supplies during their annual “Backpack Bonanza Giveaway Saturday.

The giveaway started at 7 a.m. yesterday but organizers tell us families started lining up as early as 11:30 a.m. Friday. The backpacks were full of school supplies for the new school year.

“Watching the kids come through the lines today, they were grateful for the things we had. I was grateful we had enough backpacks,” said executive assistant Desire Tegge.

Over the past few months collection boxes were placed at more than 50 area businesses and organizations. The rescue mission said they are already gearing up for their annual toy drive in December.
