Two hikers found dead near Amboy Crater

A married couple was found dead after being separated while hiking in the open desert in San Bernardino near the Amboy Crater.

The bodies of 58-year-old Kathie Barber and 60-year-old Gen Miake, both of Yorba Linda, were located about 100 yards apart by a sheriff’s helicopter just after 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

Barber had called 911 earlier in the day saying she had been separated from her husband and could not find him. She told dispatchers that Miake had a heart condition and that they had run out of water in the triple digit heat. Their car was located at the trailhead.

The pair is believed to have only been hiking since 11 a.m., but recovery teams noted the temperature was 113 degrees.
