Organizers gearing up for second annual Comic Con Palm Springs
Thousands of people will converge on Palm Springs dressed in their favorite super hero gear this weekend. Comic Con Palm Springs is back for the second year and preparations have been underway since last year. 15,000 people are expected to fill the Palm Springs Convention Center for the second annual Comic Con.
Founder Christopher Spellman said he’s thrilled his event has been so well received.
“It’s great to see how many people are interested, because it means more people coming to our valley. And it’s exciting to see so many people interested in the event. It’s gonna keep growing hopefully,” Spellman said.
The annual event drawing visitors from around the world.
“We have a lot of people coming in from out of town. The majority is from our valley, which is great cause we wanted to have something fun for our residents. But last year we got 41 out of the 50 states and 14 or 16 countries and we’re looking on par with that,” Spellman said.
Which means more visitors during a time that’s normally dead.
“Now it’s busy, the restaurants are full and it is really great to have an event like this that brings this many people into Palm Springs in August,” said Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon.
It’s not just organizers gearing up for the big weekend. Sherman’s Deli owner Sam Harris said it’s all hands on deck this weekend.
“All of our managers, all of our staff, all of our cooks. We’ll be getting the food out quick so they will be able to go back and have some fun,” Harris said.
Because the restaurant is walking distance from the convention center, Harris expects big crowds.
“It will probably be double the amount of people we had last year. So it’s great for the city cause not only are they coming to Sherman’s, they’re spending money all over at the hotels, restaurants, so it’s a great event. It’s only going to get bigger,” Harris said.
The city and businesses agree they’re happy to have the comic book fans back in Palm Springs.
