Locals raise concerns over the possibilty of President Trump ending the DACA program

A decision by President Donald Trump can change the lives of nearly 800,000 people Tuesday. The president is expected to end the program protecting young immigrants who were brought to the U.S illegally as children.

“I’m very worried it going to happen tomorrow,” said Neftali Galarza, from the City of Coachella.

The expected announcement comes as the White House faces a deadline by state officials threatening to sue the Trump administration if President Donald Trump does not end the DACA program.

Activists in the Coachella Valley say the removal will impact more than the 800,000 directly threatened.

“My best friend, he’s a teacher for Teach for America in one of the inner city schools in LA and he’s a DACA recipient and he’s able to be a teacher to these kids who need him, because of DACA,” Galarza said.

Sources familiar with the plan to eliminate DACA say trump will include a 6-month delay before enforcement.

Rosa Elena Sahagun is an attorney and immigration activist. She says it’s a waiting game until a decision is made.

“I think the six month gap that is being rumored, because remember right now we don’t have official word from the white house. If there is that gap, congress has an opportunity to act and protect those students, should lit chose to do so, but at the end of the day, there is nothing concrete for the future of these young people,” Sahagun said.

During his campaign, Trump promised to eliminate DACA immediately, but since then, he’s said it’s become one of his most difficult decisions.

The Obama administration created the DACA program in 2012. Officials with Homeland Security say they process hundreds of DACA applications everyday.

Local congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz released a statement on the possible end of the DACA program on his facebook page:
