Locals react to Trump administration’s decision to end DACA
The Trump administration formally announced on Tuesday it is ending DACA, a program that protected nearly 800,000 young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.
We reached out with locals on both sides of the aisle as they weigh-in on this morning’s announcement.
18-year-old Oscar Perez was brought into the U.S. from Mexico when he was just two. He says being a dreamer he has lived in fear, “you live in the shadows basically. Trying to do your best not to get caught by authorities.”
“This is the place I call home. I consider my self as an America. Even though I’m not… Legally,” says Perez.
Amalia Deaztlan, an activist and president of Democratic Women of the Desert calls the announcement a painful and divisive decision.
“It is very difficult to understand that hatred and the reason for trying to bleach America,” says Deaztlan.
On the other side of the aisle, Republicans support the administration’s decision.
“This is a good forced hand, because these people can now do what they need to do to become citizens,” says Joy Miedecke , President of the East Valley Republican Women.
Miedecke says she wants help dreamer receive their citizenship and says that valley Republicans have been working the past three months to create a sponsorship program that will assist dreamers.
