Local groups warn against DACA scams

It’s a cause for concern for millions of DACA dreamers across the country who could be tricked into paying thousands of dollars to a lawyer that doesn’t exist.

A DACA recipient’s dream could quickly turn into a nightmare by an immigration scheme local groups want you to know about

“Be careful about scams, if it sounds too good to be true then it’s not true,” said Luz Gallegos of the Todec Legal Center.

The scam involves a caller that says they can secure your DACA status but for a price.

“There’s a lot of fear within the community, we can not let fear take over us, we are a resilient community, and we need to stay united, organized and informed,” Gallegos said.

“If someone is unsure about their DACA status the first thing they should do is get a free consult, not pay somebody for a consultation,” said Karan Kler, executive director of Coachella Valley Immigration Services and Assistance.

Kler said it’s always important to verify you’re speaking to a legitimate source.

“Let’s be educated let’s get on the internet, get on to uscis.Gov, that will tell you that no one can do anything for you except for what is printed there,” Kler said.

On the website, you can find tools to check your citizenship status from a verified government website

“If somebody promises you something they can do for you, I would love for them to please come to us,” Kler continued.

President Trump is allowing up to six months for Congress to pass a replacement to the executive order that allows children to be students in the United States.

“Now more than ever it’s time to put pressure on our government on congress and senate for them to pass a solution, a permanent solution,” Gallegos said.
