TRAFFIC ALERT: Overnight full freeway closure

For a second night, motorists were being detoured off Interstate 10 early Wednesday morning in Indio as construction crews continued work to build the new Jefferson Street interchange.

The freeway’s eastbound lanes were shut down at the Jefferson exit, and traffic was detoured to Avenue 42, then back onto the freeway at Monroe Street.

As of 4:45 a.m. backup in the eastbound freeway lanes was minimal, but by 5:15 a.m. traffic was beginning to back up toward Washington Street. As of 6:00 a.m. the freeway was open again, but backup remained. Traffic was beginning to clear.

Westbound freeway lanes were open.

The roadwork was expected to be completed by 6:00 a.m.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held August 17 and attended by local representatives to celebrate the interchange’s near completion.
