Desert Hot Springs combating blight, illegal dumping through program
The City of Desert Hot Springs is taking a bite out of blight through a program aimed at curbing illegal dumping in the city. The city has contracted Desert Valley Disposal to conduct patrols where crew pick up bulky trash dumped into open spaces. The effort is meant to help beautify the city.
According to Chris Cunningham, a representative from the disposal company, since the effort began about a year and a half ago, crews went from picking up 80 tons of trash per month to the current 10-12 tons of trash per month.
Cunningham said continued education for the public on not dumping their trash illegally is working.
“We go into the neighborhoods, alleyways, anything that we can see from the street that cause blight, we go out and get it,” he said.
Cunningham asked anyone in the city that needed to dump bulky items to give Desert Valley Disposal a call at (760) 329-5030. He said they would be able to coordinate a schedule and most items that needed to be discarded could be done so without charge.
