Local remembers deadly 1932 hurricane that killed hundreds in Puerto Rico

As Puerto Ricans begin to clean up the damage caused by Hurricane Maria one local woman remembers her experience during one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit the island.

89-year-old Lita Bowman was just 8 years old when San Ciprián struck her hometown of Rio Piedras in 1932.

The storm killed over 200 people and destroyed thousands of homes.

Bowman says she knows all too well what it feels like to lose everything in a hurricane.

“I was crying last night it really touched me because I know what they’re going through and some will never have a home again,” Bowman said.

Bowman’s mother decided to move her family to New York shortly after Hurricane San Ciprián. She’s been living in palm springs for the past 10 years.
