Wind advisory in effect for Coachella Valley and mountains

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory in effect Thursday in the mountains and deserts, with gusts up to 50 miles per hour in the forecast in some areas.

A deep trough of low pressure moving over Southern California was creating the strong winds. They’re expected to blow west to southwest between 20 and 30 mph, though gusts could reach speeds up to 40 or 50 mph.

The strongest winds were expected in the afternoon and evening along mountain crests, through mountain passes and into adjacent deserts, the NWS said. The winds were expected to die down by early Friday, but strong winds could pick up again Friday afternoon.

The wind advisory, signaling winds or gusts of at least 35 miles per hour, will be in force from 11 a.m. today until 1 a.m. Friday in the mountains of Riverside County and the Coachella Valley. The weather agency advised those in the mountains and deserts to “drive with extra caution.”

“Strong winds can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” the NWS said. “Blowing dust in the deserts can lead to restrictions in visibility.”
