Family shares story of Indio hit-and-run crash that induced labor
A local family is recovering after hit-and-run crash in Indio over the weekend sent a mother into labor.
According to the Indio Police Department, on Saturday night around 7:40 p.m. the Ramirez family — the father, who was driving; the mother; and their 5-year-old child — was in a white Jeep traveling southbound on Monroe Street, north of Oleander Drive, when a 1999 black Ford Expedition made a left turn in front of the Jeep.
David Ramirez says a simple trip to the grocery store has now changed his family’s life.
“I turned around right away to tell my wife to call the ambulance and my son was bleeding from his head and everything,” Ramirez said.
His five-year-old son, Roderigo Ramirez, suffering a broken arm and leg had to be airlifted to a hospital in Moreno Valley, but is recovering well.
Ramirez also suffered injuries of his own.
His wife, Michelle Ramirez was eight months pregnant. “I was concerned for the both of them, that she can lose the baby and right away they rushed her to the hospital,” David said.
Michelle had an emergency cesarean-section and welcomed home a healthy baby boy, Ezra.
“I got excited to see my son but I didn’t’ want him to come that way. It hurts.” David said.
The person who hit the family’s Jeep ran off and has been on the run since.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male who was last seen wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.
