Moreno Valley juvenile and adult arrested for armed carjacking

A 16-year-old juvenile and an 18-year-old man were arrested Sunday for allegedly taking a car at gunpoint in Palm Desert.

It happened around 10:50 a.m. when Palm Desert Police officers responded to a carjacking in a retail parking lot on the 72400 block of Highway 111.

Officers arrived within minutes and learned two black males took the victim’s vehicle at gunpoint and fled from the scene.

A Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy observed the vehicle enter the freeway onto westbound Interstate-10 at Date Palm Drive and initiated a pursuit.

The pursuit was terminated after a short distance due to unsafe speeds and public safety considerations.

A short time later, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers located the vehicle off the I-10 freeway in the Cabazon area. The passenger, later identified as a 16-year-old juvenile from Moreno Valley, was taken into custody.

The driver fled the scene in the vehicle and continued westbound on the I-10 and later westbound on the 60 freeway. The vehicle exited the freeway and stopped on Cottonwood Avenue and Heacock Street in Moreno Valley.

The driver, identified as 18-year-old Deandre John Ray of Moreno Valley, was taken into custody. The juvenile was booked into the Indio Juvenile Hall and Deandre Ray was booked into the Indio county jail. Both subjects were charged with carjacking.

Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call the Palm Desert Police Department at (760) 836-1600 reference case #T172670035.
