Community and tribal leaders come together at luncheon
Coachella Valley leaders and tribal leaders gathered Thursday for a luncheon at Fantasy Springs Casino to speak on ways they can work together to better the valley as a whole.
The luncheon was hosted by the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Each city leader was given five minutes to give updates on its city’s economic activity and future plans.
CBS Local 2’s Tom Tucker was the mediator during the event’s panel, asking several questions on topics such as marijuana, the CV Link and vacation rentals.
Palm Springs Mayor Robert Moon says the sale of cannabis in the city has brought a boost in revenue.
“Last year, we pulled a million and half from medical marijuana,” said Moon.
Meanwhile, La Quinta Mayor Linda Evans says the city recognizes marijuana from a federal standpoint.
“The only allowance we have in our city is licensed delivery services to deliver medical marijuana to homebound patients. Right now we don’t have zoning to allow any type of dispensaries and our council has not embraced what the state of California is moving toward.”
When it came to transportation, many cities were in support of the CV Link, but not all were on board. Eighty percent of people living in Rancho Mirage voted against it.
“We didn’t have the luxury of it running along the wash. The other reason was the use of measure A funds; it was an issue we wanted to bring up on the cross front now and 10 years down the road, and the maintenance wasn’t quite explained,” said Rancho Mirage Mayor Charles Townsend.
When commenting on vacation rentals, Moon says it’s difficult to enforce strict rules.
“We want to have places for people to stay but we have to preserve the neighborhoods. It’s a difficult balancing act here.”
Meanwhile the City of Coachella has no issue with vacation rentals there.
“The feedback I’ve gotten from our residents is that they’re okay with it. But were a different community, we’re working-class, people are having birthday parties anyway. People are hanging out at night. Vacation rentals are not a problem for the city of Coachella,” said Mayor Steven Hernandez
When asked what would make the Coachella Valley a better place, all city leaders answered education.
