How local law enforcement are preparing for Desert Oasis after Las Vegas concert shooting

Desert Oasis Music Festival, another open air concert, is set to kick off at the Empire Polo Ground. After a gunman opened fire on a crowd of festivalgoers, killing more than 50 people and injuring 527, Indio police say they are taking every precaution to make sure they’re ready to react.

This weekend thousands of reggae fans are expected to flock to the music festival in Indio. Indio Police Sgt. Dan Marshall says he understands music lovers may be nervous this weekend but he says security will include seasoned personnel.

“All those plans are already created; the people that are going to work this weekend are seasoned veterans of large scale events.”

Empire Music Ventures, the company putting on the festival, issued a statement extending their sympathies and assuring guests safety is the highest priority.

One La Quinta resident who attended the tragic Las Vegas festival said she will attend another open air concert.

“I might be selling my StageCoach tickets. Being in an enclosed area like this, we’re sitting ducks, and unfortunately not that I would carry a gun but, we’re unarmed. We’re in a venue where were all enjoying, relaxing and having a good time, and that’s the farthest thing from our minds. We’re watching fabulous entertainers.”

Sgt. Dan Marshall hopes another tragedy like Las Vegas does not happen, but says if it looks like that migh happen again, people should speak up.

“See something say something. If you’re at a venue and you see a trip hazard, if there’s a choke point or crowds aren’t moving like they should, say something.”

Empire Music Ventures says any questions related to public safety concerns should be directed to the Indio Police Department.
