Transient pleads guilty to stabbing at Indio homeless shelter, sentenced to five years

A man who stabbed a fellow transient at an Indio homeless shelter pleaded guilty Thursday to assault with a deadly weapon and was immediately sentenced to five years in state prison.

Anthony Edward Sanchez, 21, of Riverside, was arrested following the alleged attack that occurred around noon May 23 at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, 47470 Van Buren St.

Sanchez stabbed the man in the chest and abdomen, leaving him hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Indio police Sgt. Daniel Marshall said both men were clients of the homeless shelter.
