Xavier College Prep adds boys volleyball program

The Saints officially added boys volleyball to their athletic program on Wednesday, becoming just the second local high school to offer the sport.

Athletic Director Mark Campbell said, “interest started peaking years back, at that point we started the conversation. We realized is wasn’t a reality at that point but kept the conversation open. Fast forward to last April, the conversation gained momentum once again.”

Campbell then went on to add that the idea came from the students at the school, with a high level of interest.

“This is something that was completely student driven, something they wanted to be a part of, a sport they wanted to participate in. They went to Coach Allen (Head Girls Coach), convinced her to coach the team and the boys program was established. Like anything we do, if the students show a desire and commitment to it we will support them 100 percent,” Campbell said.

Tryouts will take place in February with some open gyms between now and then. The first game will be played in March. The Saints already have 8 matches on their schedule.
