Desert X “Mirage” ordered to be removed

The City of Palm Springs announced that the mirror house has been ordered to be taken down within the next 30 days.

The mirror house titled “Mirage” — located on W Racquet Club Rd near N Palm Canyon Dr — was created by Doug Aitken and was part of Desert X. A collection of art installations across the Coachella Valley.

The “Mirage” art installation has caused problems for people who live near it. Neighbors reported traffic and littering in the area.

Palm Springs issued this statement on their decision to have the art installation removed.

The Planning Commission considered a Land Use Permit to allow the “Mirage” exhibit by Doug Aitken to be open to the public between October 2017 to March 2017 at a public hearing yesterday. Despite the proposal by the applicant to limit the number of visitors and to use a shuttle to transport visitors to the site, the Planning Commission found that the traffic impacts would be excessive and that the exhibit was incompatible with the adjacent single-family neighborhood, and voted 3 to 2 to deny the Land Use Permit. Absent any appeals of the action, the exhibit will need to be removed from the site within the next 30 days.
