Indio to unveil new public art project on historic water tower

The city of Indio will unveil a new public art project on Thursday, using the historic M.H. Whittier Water Tower as its canvas.

The 60-foot-high water tower, originally erected in 1921, will be used to project 360-degree art onto its exterior, with a debut display tonight at 6:30 p.m., at its current location at the Coachella Valley History Museum.

City officials say the tower’s height and location make it ideal for public viewing at several locations throughout the city, including Miles Avenue and Miles Avenue Park.

Scheduling for future displays remains in flux, but officials said art will likely be featured two to three times per week in the early evenings.

The project is being funded by Indio’s public art fund and administered by the city’s Public Art and Historic Preservation Commission.

Tonight’s unveiling ceremony is free and open to the public.
