LGBT activist remembered with vigil in Palm Springs

Hundreds gathered in Palm Springs Wednesday for a vigil to honor longtime resident and LGBT activist George Zander.

On November 1, 2015, Zander and his husband were attacked outside a Palm Springs bar. Zander died a month after the attack.

Two men, Christopher James Carr and Keith Edward Terranova plead guilty to federal charges for the attack earlier this year. Carr was sentenced to four years in state prison and Terranova received a three-year probationary term.

Vigil organizers wanted to hold a ceremony filled with love and acceptance.

“With George, we remember him with his activism and with today’s current environment, we need people to be more active more engaged in life and politics and have voices heard and George would’ve been proud to hear people doing that,” said John Diskin, Managing Partner at Grand Central.

The vigil was followed by a rally and march through downtown Palm Springs.
