Warhol in the Park: Valley children create, learn from pop artist’s work
It was a fine day for fine art in La Quinta Saturday afternoon.
Families were invited to Old Town La Quinta for “Warhol in the Park,” a valley-wide arts and education event that aims at engaging local kids the work of the late iconic pop-art artist Andy Warhol.
“Andy Warhol, he’s basically known for the commercial element of his work,” Old Town Artisan Studios Executive Director Thomas Burns said. “These are images, whether you’re 5 years old or 90 years old, they’re recognizable and familiar to you.”
The kids were taught about Warhol and then were provided a book, where they could put their own spin on some of his most famous designs.
“A lot of people don’t think they’re artists,” Burns said. “We’re hoping that this experience flips that trigger, and makes them think, ‘You know what, I can paint, or I can be an artist, or it’s something I’d like to pursue.”
The event was created following the cut back and elimination of art programs in schools.
Along with Old Town Artisan Studios, the event was co-sponsored by Palm Springs Life Magazine and the Palm Springs Art Museum.
The Palm Springs Art Museum is hosting an exhibition of Warhol’s works through May 28.
