Winds whip through the valley as festival goers arrive

Some early Coachella campers were faced with the strongest winds of the day, luckily those winds calmed down later in the evening.

Canopies and tents were seen tossed into the air by high winds. A palm tree snapped in half near the restrooms at the campgrounds at the Polo Fields in Indio.

Low visibility was a problem throughout the valley and forced a road closure at Indian Canyon between Tramview and Garnet for seven hours.

In Desert Hot Springs, downed power lines left 1,500 people without power and strong gusts overturned a big rig. The driver walked away without injuries. By evening, the winds gave way. The second rush of festival goers were able to avoid the strong winds.

“No, it wasn’t too windy. It was perfect,” said Los Angeles resident Jimmy Robles

“This is like perfect weather. It’s like home away from home for me,” said Anup Thota, from India.

There will congested roads as tens of thousands of other festival goers come into town. Remember to drive with caution through wind gusts and be patient with the influx of motorists on the road.
