Police in Banning are searching for a man who is believed to be armed and dangerous. Officers with the department were posted outside of a residence on Saturday where they believed the suspect was barricaded inside. The situation remained active for nearly twelve hours before they realized the man had escaped.

The situation began to unfold around 8:10 a.m. on Ramsey Street. Officers with the Banning Police Department told KESQ News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 that they were responding to a domestic disturbance at a home in the 2200 block of West Ramsey Street. Upon arrival, officers learned that a female victim had been assaulted, said lieutenant Vincent Avila.

The victim identified the suspect as 33-year-old James Britton of Banning and claimed he had brandished a firearm and made threats against her life, Avila said.

The victim reportedly told police that Britton left the location in a dark colored vehicle and a search by law enforcement began. Avila said that Britton was located a short time later in the 3900 block of West Ramsey Street, but when officers attempted to make contact, he fled on foot and ran into a nearby home where the victim lived.

Believing he may be armed, officers attempted to get Britton to surrender. They set up a perimeter and additional law enforcement agencies, including the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, were called in to assist with the standoff, said Avila. After eleven hours, law enforcement personnel made intro into the home and discovered Britton was not inside. A search of the home located a stolen firearm from the City of Colton.

Police said the suspect is still on the run and there is a warrant for his arrest from a previous incident. Britton is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. If Britton is seen, the public is requested to call 9-1-1.

Avila said that several residences in the area were evacuated for safety concerns during the stand off. This included several residents from the Golden Meadows Convalescent Home. All residents were able to return back to their residents at the conclusion of the incident. No one was injured. Ramsey Street was closed for hours, but had reopened by 9 p.m. Saturday.

The Banning Police Department is requesting the assistance of the public who may have information at 951-922-3170.
