Firefighters, local officials rally to oppose Prop 6
Community groups joined together Thursday morning at Patriot Park to rally against Proposition 6, an upcoming November ballot measure that would repeal the Road Repair and Accountability Act.
Critics of Prop 6 say the repeal would compromise road and bridge safety, especially in emergency situations.
The Riverside County No on Prop 6 conference drew support from a variety of community groups, including firefighters, engineers and construction workers.
Cathedral City major Stan Henry sounded off against Prop 6 as well as representatives from the Riverside City Firefighters Association, Seismic Safety Commission, Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, and the Alfred A. Alquist Seismic Safety Commission.
Supporters of Proposition 6 list the following reasons in favor of the measure, according to the “Yes on 6” campaign website:
Gas and car tax hikes cost a lot and will drive up California’s already-high cost of living These tax hikes will increase automatically each year so that by 2021, California residents will pay $2 more per gallon for gas It’s a blank check tax hike that isn’t used to actually fix the roads — most of the money taxed is used for reasons other than road construction There is no accountability — requirements for the use of the funds are not included in the tax measure infrastructure funds are being used inefficiently There are better options
