One killed in Route 243 crash in Pine Cove
A motorist was killed today when his vehicle plowed into a tree along state Route 243 in Pine Cove.
The fatal crash happened about 12:10 p.m. on the west side of the two-lane highway, near McGovern Road, just north of Idyllwild, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics reached the location within 10 minutes and found the man, whose name was not immediately released, pinned inside a white pickup truck, according to reports from the scene.
Firefighters immediately summoned a Mercy Air helicopter crew to have the victim transported to a trauma center for life-saving treatment, but the motorist died before the helicopter could get there, according to the CHP.
Officers shut down both sides of the highway at 12:40 p.m. for the preliminary investigation and to remove the wreckage. It was unclear how long the closure would be in effect.
North- and southbound drivers were being turned around at the scene.
