Student Athlete of the Week – Matthew Kelsey

On the football field all Matt Kelsey knows is playing fast. Whether it is hitting the corner and switching the gears, or flying to the ball carrier on defense but off the field this senior likes to slow it down.

“I love reading. Anytime you see me on the phone in class not doing anything I am reading a book so some people clown on me for that. Make fun of me but it has just always been a passion of mine,” Matthew Kelsey said.

Moving from Utah to Wisconsin and then starting his freshman year here in the valley. Not only did he come out of no where literally but on the football field it has been coming out of now where figuratively here in his senior year.

“I felt like last year I was JD’s sub for everything so he never came out of the game so I rarely got playing time. Coming in I knew I would have a bigger role I just didn’t know how big it would be,” Kelsey said.

“I know last year he kind of got shadowed by JD but we knew this year was going to be his year and have a great season. He’s done that,” Ron Shipley said.

Now one of the valley’s best and the proof that even if you’re not god given talent you can make your own talent.

“Freshman year I was not at this level. I was not one of those starting players who showed what they can do. Sophomore year I came out and got JV MVP and last year and this year I have pushed myself harder. Come up on varsity and have gotten bigger. Just really tried to show people what I could do,” Kelsey said.

So don’t be against him and don’t argue against him.

“Ever since freshman year I really have been pushing to be a lawyer. That’s kind of my main goal,” Kelsey said.
