Indio International Tamale Festival kicks off weekend

The Indio International Tamale Festival is kicking off the weekend Saturday. It will be the 27th edition.

Over 100,000 people are expected to attend. The festival features nearly 70 tamale booths—six stages of entertainment—and hundreds of various entertainment booths. Organizers expect to sell more than 300-thousand tamales this weekend. Admission is free.

“When it started 27 years ago, it was a three hour event with about 1,500 people. I think they had 15 tamales booths. Now we are 100,000 people and we have almost 60 or 70 tamale booths.
the city’s really excited to have this every year,” Jim Curtis, community services director for the City of Indio, said.

Recently, the Food Network ranked the Indio International Tamale Festival in the top 10 “All-American Food Festivals” in the nation.

The celebration will begin from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday will be from 10:00 am the morning until 5 in the afternoon In Old Town Indio.
