As the holidays near, residents donate to local charities

It’s the season for giving and dozens of residents are kicking it off by donating to local organizations that help those in need.

News Channel 3’s Lauren Coronado spent the evening at a couple of holiday charity events on the west end of the Coachella Valley.

At a charity event at 849 in Palm Springs, one-of-a-kind, handmade wreaths were up for auction. Dozens bid on their favorite designs with the LGBT Community Center of the Desert and the Palm Springs Animal Shelter.

“We’re here to support LGBTQ people, along their way whatever that may be in their own personal journey,” said

“Of course our animals benefit, but how fun, when you get to see people bid on these handcrafted, lovingly, handcrafted wreaths. It’s fabulous. Everybody’s having a good time. It’s very cheery. I think it’s the spirit of the holidays,” said

That spirit shined bright at the silent auction extravaganza at the Double Tree Hotel, where supporters of the Boys and Girls Club of Cathedral City came together.

“We charge $1 a day. We pick them up at school, bring them to the club. We feed them an afternoon snack, we provide programs in academic success, healthy lifestyle and build good citizenship,” said

Hundreds of children benefit from those services. Kayla Sachs used to be a member, but now she’s a volunteer and a leader in training.

“This has helped me grow up to be a better me. I’ve gotten so much work experience. I’ve gotten over 400 hours of community service,” Sachs said.

She is grateful for those pledging to keep the club’s doors open.

“It’s helping benefit kids for their future and give them a nice childhood,” Sachs said.

The Boys and Girls Club ‘Extravaganza’ event raised $100, 000 last year. Organizers are hoping to exceed that number tonight.
