TRAFFIC ALERT: Highway 86 back up to speed in Coachella

Traffic on Highway 86 was back up to speed Tuesday morning after some overnight construction that closed lanes.

Caltrans crews were working on Highway 86 in Coachella Tuesday morning performing concrete repairs.

The work had shut lanes down northbound just before the Interstate 10 Interchange.

Northbound lanes of Highway 86 were closed, according to Caltrans.

There was also two-plus miles of traffic back up reported.

Caltrans said the work is part of an ongoing pavement replacement program repairing nearly 150 miles throughout the Coachella Valley.

The $17 million, seven-month project began in July and was initially beset by problems with collisions in the traffic backup.

On October 18, the CHP issued a SigAlert in both directions of the freeway at Washington Street due to numerous collisions in an area where traffic was backed up due to the construction work.
