Here’s what’s closed for George H.W. Bush’s funeral

Large portions of the federal government will be suspending operations Wednesday in recognition of the National Day of Mourning for the death of former president George H.W. Bush.

This includes your local post office.

“Out of respect for the 41st President of the United States and to honor his vast contributions to our country during his lifetime, and consistent with the Presidential Proclamation,” a statement on the USPS website reads, “the United States Postal Service will suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity on Dec. 5.”

“We will provide limited package delivery service on that day to ensure that our network remains fluid and we do not experience any impacts to our package delivery operations that might negatively affect our customers or business partners during the remainder of our busy holiday season,” the statement continues.

Federal employees will get the day off however, employees deemed essential for national security and other vital government services will still have to report for work on Wednesday.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed on a nonholiday for the first time since Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The NYSE, Nasdaq and CME held a minute of silence in honor of Bush on Monday.

Many federal courts will be closed wth exceptions. The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia will be closed, but the District Court for the Southern District of Indiana will operate on a “modified basis” with limited staff in some offices, according to its website. The District Court for Oregon will be open for business on Wednesday, as will the Southern District Court for California in San Diego.

The Internal Revenue Service has granted taxpayers an extra day to file and return any taxes that were due on Dec. 5, a national day of mourning to honor President George H.W. Bush.

Taxpayers will now have until Thursday, Dec. 6, to pay anything to the IRS that was due the previous day without penalty.
