Residents at mobile home park looking out for potential floods

With rain coming down in the desert, a few residents in flood-prone areas in Palm Springs are keeping an eye to make sure their homes are safe.

“Lot’s of mud and rock and debris filled up a lot filled up a lot of these trailers down here,” David Netherby, a resident, said.

He still has memories of last year’s flood in September 2017, damaging units at the safari park mobile home community in Palm Springs. He’s lived there for the past two years and has seen his fair share of stormy weather.

“Living out here in the desert, you don’t expect anything like that you so…it’s pretty crazy,” he said.

What’s not crazy? Making sure his mobile home is flood-ready, especially with this recent rainstorm. He says he’s fortunate to have his home on a raised foundation and has gutters to direct any run off away from his home and into the street.

“It’s high enough off the ground and pretty secure. A carport on one side, a screen and porch on the other side,” Netherby said.

For Magi Bos, a four year resident of the mobile home park, she admits she didn’t take any immediate steps to reinforce her mobile home and says she’s fortunate recent showers have been relatively light.

“We’ve been lucky that the rains have been really good, and it’s blessed that we don’t have to worry about it,” she said.

However, she does plan to eventually make some changes.

“I’d like to put up some gutters so that the water goes out into the street and maybe possibly doing the French drain,” Bos said.

The best hope though for people at the mobile home park is for no torrential downpours.

“I just hope it stays light like this and it just keeps coming down gradually. If it becomes a torrent, then it then it becomes a problem,” Netherby said.
