Highway 243 reopens between Banning and Idyllwild

Highway 243 reopened to traffic in both directions between Banning and Idyllwild following a near week-long closure.

The stretch of HWY 243 near Lake Fulmor, between Banning and Idyllwild, was closed last Friday so crews could repair culverts alongside the mountain highway. Caltrans crews told News Channel 3 they were repairing over 400 feet of damaged roads, replacing 120 feet of piping underground.

Despite the reopening, Caltrans says over the next few weeks, crews will continue repairs necessary to finish the emergency culvert project. Flagging may be necessary and updates will be provided once they are available.

Roads were originally expected to remain closed until this Friday, but crews were able to finish ahead of schedule.
