FIND Food Bank distributes one million lbs of USDA food
Last week President Trump signed into law the 2018 Farm Bill that funds programs nationwide for hunger prevention. Within the last fiscal year, FIND Food Bank has used support like this to bring more than 10 million meals to those in need locally.
“Once we receive the USDA products, we actually distribute them at nineteen different locations throught the Coachella Valley,” said President and CEO of FIND Food Bank, Debbie Espinosa. “Four of them are off of the FIND Food Bank mobile pantry trucks and the others are distributed at partner agencies of ours like St. Margaret’s, like Well in the Desert, like Catholic Charities.”
FIND Food Bank has been distributing United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) products for more than fifteen years, but only as a subcontractor of another organization based in Riverside. As of July 2018, FIND is now a direct contractor with the state as the valley’s regional food bank.
“The food bank now has the ability to make decisions on its own for the people that it serves,” said Espinosa.
And that means more food locally. A lot more. Since this change was made, more than one million pounds of USDA food has been brought in for families in need.
A family of four with an annual income of under $38,000 qualifies for this USDA food, but no one is turned away as long as food is available.
