Animal Samaritans employees would like to remind people to keep their pets indoors as they ring in the new year.

Every year shelters see an increase of stray pets after events where fireworks are used.

Michelle Bergeron, adoption supervisor for Animal Samaritans provided some tips to keep your pet safe.

“Just keep them indoors, please keep them indoors, Bergeron said. “Sometimes, if you play some classical music that will help keep them distracted.”

Bergeron added, “One of the biggest problems we have when we pick up pets from the shelter is that their phone numbers aren’t good or the address is not good. So, please make sure your dogs and cats are chipped and that the information is current.”

Bergeron says hundreds of stray animals are found each year after firework shows which is why she’s stressing the message keep your pets indoors.
