Police activity near Palm Springs shopping center Saturday afternoon; armed man surrenders

UPDATE:

Palm Springs police say they were called to “RI International” at 2:58, after a man with a gun appeared at the business.

Investigators say the man did not threaten anyone.

Officers arrived on scene, and set up a perimeter.

RI international, a mental health facility, and surrounding businesses were evacuated.

Police established communication with the man.

After 45 minutes of negotiations, the man safely surrendered unarmed to police.

The man was detained for a mental health evaluation, and is facing a probation violation for having a weapon.

Police have not released the man’s name.

INITIAL REPORT:

Several Palm Springs police officers responded to shopping center on North Palm Canyon near Raquet Club Saturday afternoon, just after 3:00 pm.

We have received several calls into the newsroom regarding police activity at that location.

Our calls seeking information from the Palm Springs Police Department have not yet been returned.
