One person killed in I-10 crash involving SUV and big rig

One person was killed in a crash between a big rig and SUV in on I-10 in Banning.

A Cal Fire spokesperson told News Channel 3 first responders were dispatched to the crash at around 1:24 p.m. The crash happened on the eastbound side of I-10 near the Highland Springs exit in Banning.

When crews got on scene the reported seeing an SUV that was struck by a Semi Truck. Three victims in the SUV self- extricated themselves, but one of those three, the big rig driver, suffered major injuries.

According to the California Highway Patrol, they are working on towing both vehicles.

According to a California Highway Patrol news release, the victim killed in the collision was the driver of the big rig.

The big rig, “for reasons yet unknown” drifted across all lanes of traffic into the fast lane, causing it to collide with the passenger side of the SUV, a Toyota Highlander, which was occupied by a driver and passenger. The SUV continued to get pushed out of the slow lane and onto the shoulder, where both vehicles came to a rest after the big rig pinned the SUV to the center median wall.

Emergency crews responding to the scene found the driver of the big rig unresponsive in the driver’s seat of the truck, and he was transported to San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital by American Medical Response. He was pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later.

“CHP investigators are working with the Riverside County Coroner’s office to determine if a prior medical condition may have been a factor in this collision,” read the CHP news release.
