Man’s body found after fire put out at 29 Palms home

The body of a man was found after fire crews put out a fire at a residence in Twentynine Palms on Feb 21. A death investigation is underway.

At 10:16 p.m., San Bernardino County fire crews responded to reports of a residential fire at a 70216 Indian Trail. After firefighters put out the blaze, they found the body of 57-year-old Timothy James Chaffin in the residence.

Homicide Detail and Bomb/Arson Investigators then responded and initiated a death investigation. Detectives interviewed neighbors in the area and determined that Chaffin, a transient, had been living on the property. The detectives, as well as County Fire investigators, determined that there were no signs of foul play after sifting through the debris. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine Chaffin’s cause of death.
