Maria Sharapova drops out of BNP Paribas Open

Maria Sharapova will not be playing in this year’s BNP Paribas Open.

The 31-year-old Russian tennis star pulled out of the tournament due to a right shoulder injury.

28-year-old Mona Barthel will now move into the main draw as a result of Sharapova’s withdrawal, BNP Paribas announced on Twitter.

“We will miss Maria this year and hope to see her back at Indian Wells next year!” read a tweet from the tournament page.

Sharapova is currently ranked 27 in the world. She was knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open last year in the round of 128 by Naomi Osaka of Japan.

The 2019 BNP Paribas open will kick off on Monday, March 4, and run through Sunday, March 17.
