Tahquitz Canyon closed due to flood damage repairs

Tahquitz Canyon was closed Sunday due to flood damage repairs.

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians tweeted out that the popular hiking spot would be closed all day due to flooding, in addition to Indian Canyon, which sustained serious damage during the record-breaking storm. Dozens of hikers were disappointed and forced to turn around at the entrance to Tahquitz Canyon. Alternatively, some chose to hike the South Lykken trail, although hikers should be advised this trail is more rigorous, and come prepared with proper footwear and plenty of water.

Many hikers said they had hoped to make the hike to see the waterfalls which they heard are flowing after the heavy rain, but a park ranger at Tahquitz Canyon said that there was simply too much rain and runoff flowing through the trail, presenting a safety hazard. The ranger told News Channel 3 they will reassess the conditions tomorrow and then release an update on the canyon’s reopening.
