Man killed in deputy-involved shooting identified

A man killed in a Monday deputy-involved shooting in Rancho Mirage has been identified as 63-year-old Stephen Kaylor of Indio, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Bureau.

A witness at the scene of the Eisenhower Health deputy-involved shooting sent along the photo below of the suspect, now identified as Stephen Kaylor. A person known to Kaylor has confirmed that he is the man pictured.

Kaylor was reportedly shooting at two buildings on the Eisenhower Health campus before being shot according to a release issued by the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

At 4:55 p.m., deputies responded to several reports of shots being fired at the Eisenhower Health campus located on the 39000 block of Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. According to callers, the suspect was shooting at the Eisenhower Hospital and the Desert Orthopedic Center.

Deputies arrived minutes later and found a man armed with a handgun. A short time later, a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck by gunfire and deputies attempted to render life-saving measures while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

Despite these measures, the suspect died at the scene.

No deputies or civilians were injured as a result of the incident.

The incident is considered isolated, according to Lee Rice spokesperson for Eisenhower Health. The shooting led to the evacuation of both the Desert Orthopedic Center and the Desert Cardiology Center.

The involved deputy has been placed on administrative leave, as per Riverside County Sheriff’s Department policy. The investigation is being handled by the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s Central Homicide Unit and is ongoing.
